Channeling Julia Child

Last night we had friends over so I suggested that we give Boeuf Bourguignon another try.

The first time we attempted the recipe, it was right after we got married and had yet to use our new Mario Batali dutch oven from Crate and Barrel.
The recipe we used wasn't anything special and the result was ok, but underwhelming, especially considering all of the hype this dish received after Julie & Julia came out.

This time, Matt found a scan of the recipe directly from Julia Child's book. Also found here.
The recipe was confusing at times and seemed to use outdated cooking techniques, but the end result was miles ahead of the previous recipe we used! Delicious!!

Escape from Reality - Laudrée

Or should I say évasion de réalité...

Pssst... you, over there. Need a little escape from the banality of everyday life?

Let's take a trip to Paris! We're going to stop in at Laudrée and check out the Macaroon counter.

If I've lost you, and you're asking "What the heck is a Macaroon?" Start here.

This history of the elegant and chic House of Ladurée begins in 1862 when Louis Ernest Ladurée, a miller from France’s southwest, created a bakery at 16 rue Royale in Paris. At the time, this neighborhood was just begining to become the ultimate location in Paris for luxury that is known for today.

It was Ernest Ladurée’s wife, Jeanne Souchard, who had the idea of mixing styles: the Parisian café and pastry shop. Her idea gave birth to one of the first tea salons in town. The “salon de thé” had a definite advantage over the cafés: they permitted ladies to gather in freedom. Jeanne Souchard succeeded in combining the turn-of-the-century trend to modernism.
Ahhhh, I feel better now, don't you? I could stare at images of Macaroons all day, sort of like my affinity for cupcakes, although these are more exotic and speak to my French sensiblities. Did I ever mention that I have a degree in French? Yes, we can all see how well that's panned out ; )

Tuesday Night Etsy Picks - Local Edition

For this week's Etsy Picks I'm going local! This time local will mean shops found in Rhode Island, next time I'll cover shops found in the Boston Metro area.

All of the shops were found using Etsy's Shop Local search feature.

First up is a great letterpress shop that I found that specializes in cards for many occasions, calendars, and even coasters!

I am always a sucker for hand-stamped jewelry and Christina Guenther of Warwick, RI does an amazing job with her collection! I love these pieces because they're so personal.

Valentine's Day Menu

I love my husband. I also love our Valentine's Day tradition. Every year we select our menu based on dishes we've never attempted before and they always taste amazing! This year I'm making the main course and Matt is taking on Tiramisu. In fact, the Tiramisu has been started and our whole house smells like espresso right now!

Salad: Spinach Salad with Citrus Vinaigrette
Entree: Cinnamon Pancetta Carbonara
Wine: Bear Boat Pinot Noir
Dessert: Home-made Tiramisu

Gray & Green

I've decided on at gray and green look for my office. The walls are already Sherwin Williams' Morning Fog and I hope to add some kelly green accessories, along with black and white objects.

Here are some other gray & green rooms I love:

Living Room Inspiration

Truth be told, the room that could contain the most potential in my house is currently sitting unfurnished. Well, that's not entirely true. It is home to Matt's bearded dragon. So technically, Geekos' bedroom/my living room needs some love. I love this room because it has tons of light, sliding doors to our deck and a fireplace. See! So much potential! It's also nothing short of a challenge, due mostly to the fact that there are 3 entrances. Tricky. This Polyvore board is the first in a series that I'll create to get my thoughts out there and build this room piece by piece.
